Yacht delivery from the UK to Croatia, Greece and the eastern Med

The Adriatic, the Ionian and the Greek islands are some of the best cruising grounds in the world, and a growing number of our enquiries are for boats heading there from the UK, or coming back from Croatia and Greece after a few seasons.

At 2,100 to 2,900 miles it's a serious passage, so it's planned in legs with good stopping points, crew changes where needed and plenty of margin for the weather.

The route

The first part follows our route to Gibraltar: down the Channel, across Biscay and along the Atlantic coast of Spain and Portugal. Inside the Med we head east along the Spanish coast or via the Balearics, then across to Sardinia and south of Sicily or through the Strait of Messina.

For Croatia we turn north up the Adriatic; for Greece we cross the Ionian, and either go round the Peloponnese or through the Corinth Canal into the Aegean. Turkey is reached across the Aegean from there.

Typical stops

  • Gibraltar
  • Cartagena or the Balearics
  • Sardinia
  • Sicily or Malta
  • Ionian Greece (Corfu, Lefkas)

When to go

Leaving in spring gets the boat to the eastern Med for the season; September and October are also good, before the winter systems arrive.

We plan around the region's local winds, such as the mistral off the south of France, the bora in the Adriatic and the meltemi, which blows hard in the Aegean in July and August.

Good to know

  • Long passages are often split into two or three legs, which can make crew changes and your own visits easier.
  • For some motor yachts and smaller boats, shipping or road transport can be worth comparing on this distance. We'll tell you honestly which makes more sense.
  • UK-registered boats staying in the EU are subject to temporary admission and VAT rules; check your boat's position before it leaves.
