Yacht delivery along the UK south coast

Moves between the Solent and the West Country, Sussex and Kent make up more of our enquiries than any other route. Boats move for a new berth, a winter lay-up, a refit, a survey or a sale, and a short coastal passage is often the quickest and best-value way to do it.

Most of these deliveries take one or two days, run by an experienced skipper who knows the coast's tidal gates and headlands well.

The route

Heading west, the passage is shaped by its headlands: out through Hurst Narrows, past St Alban's Head and Portland Bill, where the race is avoided by keeping well offshore or taking the inshore passage at the right time, then across Lyme Bay to Start Point and on to Plymouth and the Lizard.

Heading east we round Selsey Bill and Beachy Head, pass Dungeness and through the Dover Strait to Ramsgate and the Thames. Each leg is timed to carry the tide through the gates rather than fight it.

When to go

We run coastal deliveries all year. Summer gives long days; in winter we pick a settled day and keep passages short, which is often the best time to move a boat for lay-up or refit.

Good to know

  • Short moves within the Solent are priced at our minimum day rate.
  • We can also deliver to and from the east coast, Wales, Scotland and the Channel Islands.
  • Fancy doing it yourself next time? Combine the delivery with own-boat tuition and learn the passage on your own boat.

Questions about this route

How much does it cost to move a boat along the south coast?

As a guide, from about £650 for a short hop such as Hamble to Brighton, up to about £1,900 for a sailing yacht going to Falmouth, in skipper and crew time. Fuel and moorings are extra. The instant estimate gives a range for your exact ports.

How long does a delivery from the Solent to the West Country take?

Dartmouth is usually a long day; Plymouth and Falmouth one to two days for a sailing yacht, often a single day for a motor yacht.

Do you deliver in winter?

Yes. Coastal passages are short enough to fit into a settled weather window, and winter is a busy time for moves to lay-up and refit yards.
